And what a year and a half it’s been- for nearly everyone. After 2, and very probably 3, bouts of covid; after seeing my husband hospitalized for a week with covid and pneumonia; after watching my son completely miss what should have been his first year of high school; and after my covid- sore tendons were further ravaged by endless hours of Zoom classes … and after 23 years in this bountiful country(Turkey) I have called home… we are moving back to the U.S.
Opportunity knocked several times in the week in April that followed a novena to St. Jude. Part of the bargain with this saint of the desperate and hopeless is that you give him a little promotion. I wasn’t completely hopeless, nor was I utterly desperate, but I saw that some things needed changing… and then they pretty much did, pretty much immediately, on multiple fronts.
The self portrait is for a competition I’ll enter in a bit. It was based on a photo I took while angling the camera above my head and leaning into the light source. I must admit this started as an attempt to find some angle, any angle, that would not reveal my 53 year old wattle;) I blocked the outlines in while keeping the reference for it upside down… just to see what would happen.
The wonkiness is deliberate. I really do squish my face up and to the side when I smile sometimes. I could have gone for something more tasteful, more subdued… like a nice chiaroscuro piece emerging from shadow… but this has more personality.
Enjoy your days and spaces… you never know what fate will bring you way.
