Approximately 6ft x 4ft, this enormous piece grew in the dark of my basement, against the odds of a shingles outbreak in my eye. It was too large to fit on an upstairs wall or even see the light of day until it emerged from the cool depths to migrate to its new home in the US. It is a story of winter into spring, of dark into light, of the eternal story of rebirth. It is full of life against starkness and flaunts an odd number of ordinary, cheeky sparrows full of self absorption in the dawn of a new gold dream. It is an accidental illustration of small flurries of activity nestled in stillness, and much of it entailed kneeling directly on it in my basement gloom, scooping and smearing acrylics with my hands. I’ve included several details because I can’t seem to capture the overall look with my phone: for scale I am including a somewhat random selfie taken while lying on top of a section of sky.

State of Mind (tanka):
Inside winter’s grasp
Dart Beauty’s plain little ones
Across frosty time;
Hovering, flitting, they are
Omens of Spring’s arrival.
